Monthly update, September 2022: switching to quarterly updates

Over 8 years ago I started this blog with the goal to become financially independent by 2027.

Things went a lot better than I had expected. I managed to save up SGD 840k which allowed me to quit my job and take up a new challenge at a startup. In return for equity in the company I gave up a large chunk of my salary.

As I will stay in Europe for the time being, it does not make much sense anymore to publish a monthly update in SGD.

My immediate goals:

Lifestyle goals

  • Do not rent a permanent apartment, use free house in Germany, plus temporary rentals in areas I like
  • Live wherever I want, starting from Southern Europe this winter
  • Do not get a car, but car sharing and subscriptions for some parts of the year are ok
  • Avoid buying stuff that I do not need, reduce possessions
  • Get back to socially and professionally interacting with people outside of close friends and family on a more regular basis

Monthly spending goals:

  • Retirement level: 4%/12 of current portfolio per month: currently EUR 1,891 / SGD 2,660
  • Salary men level: salary without touching savings: EUR 2,630 / SGD 3,700
  • Supplementary level: salary + withdraw EUR 1,000 from savings: EUR 3,630 /
  • 2021 average level: EUR 3,036 / SGD 5,100

I will switch to quarterly updates from now on, reporting the progress in EUR and SGD. Wish me luck 🙂

I’ve been following your blog since 2014. Back then, I was still in my cash-strapped National Service days – how time flies! Over the years, your consistent posts and excellent charts helped inspire me to learn financial literacy, and figure out how to start a career. I’ve since moved across the world for a software job in New York City 🙂 I’d like to wish you all the best with the new startup! I hope the journey will be a meaningful for you, as you continue to bring value into the world.
