First time my portfolio exceeded SGD 1.3 million – are we in a massive bubble?

In October my portfolio crossed the SGD 1.3 million mark, just a month after passing SGD 1.2 million.

October Portfolio update

My portfolio grew from SGD 1,269,342 to SGD 1,304,049. The gain came mainly from capital gains of SGD 33,571, plus SGD 1,137 in fresh investments. At today’s exchange rate, that’s just over USD 1 million – two milestones at once, nice!

Portfolio exceeded SGD 1.3M

My European startup salary is small, so I can only save a little each month. Luckily my portfolio was already around SGD 840k when I left my corporate job in 2022, and it has grown nicely since then.

Are we in a bubble?

It feels like the stock market might be in a big bubble, but it’s impossible to know when it will pop. Because of capital gains taxes in Europe, I cannot rebalance into bonds easily. For now, I am adding fresh savings into a high-yield account to redeploy once the market cools down.

How long did it take to reach each SGD 100k?

How long did it take for my portfolio to reach each SGD 100k

The first 100k took 29 months — more than two years. The last 100k took only one month. Compounding plays a big part, but I also think the market is very frothy right now.

When can I retire?

When can I retire?

I can retire once my portfolio covers my current expenses without changing my lifestyle. This will happen once the blue and green lines on the chart meet.

Right now, my portfolio can support about SGD 4,350 in monthly spending. That’s enough for a comfortable life in many European or Asian countries. In ten months, all my startup shares will be vested. I plan to stick it out until then.

In about 1.5 years I’ll turn 45 — my goal is to stop full-time work by then. 2027 was also the date I set as a retirement plan way back in 2014 when I started this blog 🙂

Onwards and upwards!
