July 2018: monthly update and Berlin calling

In July I visited Berlin, while again missing my investment goals. What happened?

July was really busy in my day jobs and at night and on the weekends I worked very hard to get my side-business off the ground. Not easy, but fun! I envision a launch in mid-October.

Portfolio update

In July my portfolio increased by SGD 9,346 or 3.1% to SGD 314,706 (USD 230,700). Fresh investments of SGD 5,730 and gains of SGD 3,616 made up for this increase.

Investments vs. plan

I invested SGD 5,730 into my portfolio which was a lot less than planned (SGD 8,000).

Fortunately, I am still ahead of the plan, thanks to a good performance in previous months.

Cumulative investments

The investment results are overall good. When I get demotivated I like to remember that I have already invested SGD 10k more this year than the whole of last year.

Dividends received

Dividends in July

SGD 2,198 – it was a bumper crop of dividends this month.

Outlook

August seems challenging, I hope things calm down soon. Still hanging on to the goal of investing SGD 100k this year while launching the company at the same time, but things are wearing thin. I am tempted to make a bit bigger investment to outsource some of the work. Let’s see!

It is definitely hard to know how much money to throw at your start up business and how much to do yourself as part of the learning process. I’m excited to see where this heads.
